Junior Coaching is open to a wide range of ages and abilities. These typically range from 8 years old to 16 years old.
Training sessions are designed to allow all to take part without feeling out of their depth.
During the spring and summer months we have the Huish Episcopi School athletics track and this provides us with the ability to run a variety of sessions mainly aimed at building speed and distance into our juniors. These sessions will normally consist of a warm up followed by a number of activities ranging from short sprint relays through to longer timed 400m runs. The session will then end with a warm down and stretch off.
During the winter months we tend to concentrate more on building style and strength into running because of the limitations of the weather. This will either be run in the school gym or on the local housing estates and cul-de-sacs. This allows us to do hill running and sprint relay work in relative safety. It is a mandatory requirement for all runners to wear high vizability vests and a head or hand torch when we run out on the footpaths. The gym sessions will include a mix of circuit training and sessions against the clock such as the 'Beep Test'. This test is particularly useful for gaging the progress of our juniors over time. As usual we will always start with a warm up and warm down and stretch off.
One of the most important elements of our junior coaching sessions is for everyone to have fun at the same time as gaining the benefits of the session.
Adults are very welcome to join us and train alongside their children. Several that have found the circuits and track sessions quite challenging!
